The definition of a gastropub is any bar or tavern that offers high quality food. Datz Deli fits this definition perfectly. You’ll find Datz at the corner of Macdill avenue and west Barcelona street in Tampa and the only negative about Datz is their parking situation. There is a small lot behind Datz on Barcelona street and a few spots in front and in back of Datz. Once parked and inside Datz, you’ll find a delightful tavern with two floors for serving their patrons. Datz serves breakfast, brunch, and dinner. I’ve had their brunch and dinner, both of which are worth it. If you’re counting your calories and carbs, Datz may not be the best place to be on a diet. However good food is hard to argue against.

Serving a variety of sandwiches, salads, and other breakfast items (pancakes and omelets), Datz for brunch is amazingly good. Whenever I go, I start with Datz’s monkey bread. This is pull-apart cinnamon bread drilled with vanilla icing.

On one of my many trips, I had the Johnny Cakes. These are cornbread pancakes, topped with pulled pork and apple butter, served with a bourbon whisky syrup. These were very good. My wife had the Migas. While flavorful, the Migas is more like a nacho than a breakfast item. The menu’s description makes you think you’re ordering a scramble or omelet instead of nachos. If that’s what you want, then by all means order the Migas. It is good.

Migas – corn tortillas scrambled with eggs, chilies, monterey jack cheese and New Mexico red chili sauce, topped with pico de gallo, avocado and sour cream.

Datz at Dinner Time

On another one of my trips to Datz for dinner, I ordered the stuffed meatloaf. This is meatloaf stuffed with bacon mac n’ cheese. Served with garlic mashed potatoes and peas, this meatloaf is exquisite. The peas weren’t all that great though. This is a very large dish. The picture shown here is of a split order, my wife had the other half. Another item worth ordering is the Waffles n’ Tweet. This is boneless fried chicken, Belgian waffles, sauteed spinach and jalapeno-maple syrup. Awesome dish, but can be very heavy. This is a large dish, which will leave you with leftovers.

I have yet to have any of Datz’s sandwiches, but that menu is extensive. Datz has lots of cocktails and 34 beers on tap to choose from. Reservations are a good idea for Friday and Saturday nights, as well as Saturday and Sunday brunch. Datz does have a text ahead option where you can text Datz and put your name on the list before you arrive. Check out Datz’s website for their menu and the text ahead number. No matter what the wait, the food is worth it.
